Sparkling Water Zine

In 1986, Ukraine suffered the worst nuclear accident in history at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A reactor went out of control during a test at low power, which led to an explosion and fire that destroyed the reactor building and released large amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. The residents of Pripyat, the industrial city nearby, were relocated as their homes were no longer safe to live in, and Pripyat has been empty ever since.

In 2020 and 2021, we went to photograph and experience this unique location. We slept in abandoned flats, were chased by dogs, narrowly evaded security, and witnessed how nature had reclaimed the streets of a ghost city that was once modern and thriving.
